  1. And another great Spanish film here; Devil’s backbone! Generally a great year with The others, buffet buddy Moritz Bleibtreu in Das Experiment, Ozpetek’s Fate ignoranti, masterpeice Memento, In the bedroom, Mulholland drive and the best of the LOTR films (I understand it was also a book so that was probably also pretty good). Could easily also have voted for half a dozen others – did not realize at the time whata great year it was for cinema, probably because the superhero franchise system was yet to appear.

    • I love your buffet buddy and he will get a poll soon! I did not realise what a great year it was too for films. A few from my top 50 of all time. I hope you are making notes, so you can manage your top 100 this year? I may even break the polls category down so people can filter on these polls by year if they wish.

  2. I saw La Pianiste when I was a teen and riding high my cinephily and it really impressed me (and I was in love with Benoît Magimel). Amélie was a huge hit here, I saw it with my sister before it was one and we came out so happy and cheerful, it’s a really good film! Devil’s backbone I saw much later but what a film! and Mulholand of course…

  3. 2001 was another good year. I went for:
    Bully – great film
Das Experiment – love this film
    Gosford Park – perfect film
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India – wonderful film
    Mulholland Drive – perfect film
No Mans Land – a great, not often mentioned, anti war film
Planet of the Apes – I love those apes
Sleepless – Argento, not his best, but it is an Argento!

I also wanted to include Donnie Darko, the Others, Read My Lips, Memento, Hannibal, Headwig and the Angry Inch, Le Fate Ignoranti and Iris. And at least five of the other films are good too!

    • Out of those I’ve only seen Gosford Park (recently too), Mulholland Drive long time ago (unpopular opinion, but didn’t like it, maybe I was too young) and Planet of the Apes which I liked, but it was far from the level of the more recent apes movies. I rewatched Memento 2 days ago and liked it more than the first time (in my top 3 of the year)! I also liked The Others and Hannibal while Donnie Darko was too weird for me. I haven’t seen the rest.

  4. “The Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter” were one of my earliest cinematic memories, so they had to be on the list 😊

    Amelie
    Donnie Darko
    Das Experiment
    Hannibal
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
    The Others
    Mulholland Drive

Honorable mentions: Spirited Away, The Hole, From Hell, Vanilla Sky, Jeepers Creepers, Riding in Cars with Boys

Btw last week I finished all of Twin Peaks after 8 months. I rewatched seasons 1 and 2 (some episodes were actually new to me, because I missed them on TV) and watched season 3 for the very first time. I’m still on the fence with it. The cast was amazing (esp. Laura Dern) and Lynch as always is genius behind the camera, but sometimes I got the feeling that he lost the ability to keep people motivated. Halfway through I thought about skipping the rest, because there were too many episodes that didn’t add anything relevant to the plot. I also felt l like there was so many wasted potential (Amanda Seyfried, Ashley Judd, Dana Ashbrook). I would’ve love to see these characters more fleshed out. But staying till the season finale was definitely worth it. Just when I thought season 2 left off with too many unanswered questions, season 3 comes along with more!

    • Definitely a good year for film.
I still have not seen the third season of TP. I wanted to watch the previous series again as I am sure I missed some of them the first time around but it seems like a big undertaking!

      • Definitely, but THE year for film is yet to come. Actually quite soon 🙂
Well, I did take a long pause inbetween as I’m not a fan of binge-watching or marathons. Season 1 is doable since it’s quite short. The 2nd doesn’t keep up that well although starting out very strong until Laura Palmer’s case is closed.
How did you like Twin Peaks when you first watched it?

  5. 2001 was a good year for film, there are many that I liked and could’ve voted for.
    Here’s my top 8:
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
    Training Day
    Memento
    Ocean’s Eleven
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
    The Royal Tenenbaums
    The Devil’s Backbone
    A Beautiful Mind

I rewatched Training Day and loved it (I think more than the first time), it entered my top 100! I’ve also watched The Devil’s Backbone for the first time and liked it a lot, I think it’s one of del Toro’s best films! 🙂
