IFG 5 & IFG 6 Film Selection

PART ONE!

It is time to vote for the films you would like to be watching in November and December!  We have a great selection again including a cinema release many will be seeing in December.  Il Divo has been given another chance as it was in a tie-break last time.  So that we can hopefully get two clear winners please vote for up to SIX films.

In December we will have a poll to determine the films for IFG 7, IFG 8 and IFG 9 (January, February and March 2020).  From the new year we will do this every three months.

PART TWO!

The Third Man has won!  But with a six-way tie for second place the only fair way of deciding the second film is with another poll.  Hopefully we will be able to include the five unsuccessful films in a future film selection poll.  Perhaps every six months we could have special editions where we have a two films that month – one of our regular editions and two weeks later a film that just missed out on selection (selected, of course, in a poll). Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Anyway, back to this poll.  Please select up to THREE films from the six films below:

Reminders:

By the 15th October 2019: Have your say in the IFG Approved Oscars: The 2019 Oscars (IFG Approved)

By the end of November 2019: Send me your list of your favourite 50 films of all time for the Annual Poll: The annual end of year IFG Favourite Films of All Time poll

Note: Although your Top 50 films will not need to be in definitive order, weighted points will be allocated to each film, therefore: Top 1-10 = 5 points, Top 11-20 = 4 points, … Top 41-50 = 1 point.

  1. Lots of countries, genres and eras represented. It will seem a shame not to have some of them as the monthly film – perhaps after we have been doing this some time (a year?) we can have a list made up of films that were nearly selected (fourth and fifth place films) to choose from. What does everyone think?

  2. By the way, five people sent films for selection: Dominik, Donnie, 4Porcelli, Razvan and me. I tried to make sure everyone had three films included whilst trying my best to make the selection as diverse as possible.

  3. Next year, as we will be selecting three films at a time, does anyone have any suggestions as to the number of choices ther shoukd be? I was thinking of cutting it down to ten or twelve films. What do people think?

      • I see. You should watch it in the order Rob told you and yeah you can skip the prequels and watch Rogue One instead, the action takes place just before ep IV so you could even start with it or you could also watch it after you see the original trilogy.

      • Episodes I: The Phantom Menace; II: Attack of the Clones; & III: Revenge of the Sith. The release order of the films was: IV, V, VI, then I, II, III, then VII, VIII and IX is the forthcoming one.

      • So you mean the middle three…
All I have to do is to watch 9 films right ? or are there more ? (f.e what about Rogue One and Solo?

      • Sorry, I should have been more explicit. I meant the prequels to the original trilogy, so therefore episodes I, II and III are the awful ones. There are more films – Rogue One and Solo, but they are classed as “Star Wars Stories” and not part of the main saga. The prequels (episodes I, II and III) add very little to the saga. I would advise either:
        A) Watching them all in the order of production (IV, V, VI, then I, II, III, then VII, VIII and then you will be ready for IX at the cinema), or
        B) Skipping the prequels entirely, thus just watching IV, V, VI, then VII, VIII and then you would be ready for the final film at the cinema. I do not say this lightly, but if you attempt to watch them you will know what I mean (the prequels are badly acted, the ambitious sets poorly designed, there are some pointless and annoying characters, and the special effects are not so special).

    • I’d just start with the original Star Wars and then see if you like it. Personally I’ve never quite gotten the hype since I prefer more “adult” scifi. SW has some good stuff but to me it’s like the first two Harry Potter books and films more geared kids and teenage boys.

  7. Hi everyone, I think we are going to be heading for a tie break. How would you all feel if I made this a two-part poll and all the ones with less than three votes were excluded? We then vote again (having up to six votes again) on the top 9/10 films. Hopefully this will ensure we have two clear winners. Let me know what you think.

  8. OK. I have closed the original poll and created it’s sequel! You can select up to three of the films. What do you think about the idea of having a “second place poll” every six months with the films that came in second place (well, it will be fourth place as in future we will be selecting three films each time). This will act as a “special edition” so will be as well as our regular monthly editions.

  9. Not sure if anyone has noticed, but NONE of the films I have suggested have been picked yet 🙂
    IFG 1 – Razvan’s choice
    IFG 2 – Donnie’s choice
    IFG 3 – 4Porcelli’s choice
    IFG 4 – Razvan’s choice
IFG 5/6 (order to be decided) – Razvan and 4Porcelli’s choice
IFG 5/6 (poll above) – Either Donnie, Dominik, 4Porcelli or Razvan’s choice.
Maybe I will have more success next year!

  10. No one wanted to see Star Wars (one of the most anticipated films of the year) ? 😮 Or maybe you didn’t want to go see it in the cinema ?

    • I really didn’t – I’ve really never gotten the Star Wars hype; it’s not the kind of sci fi I like – more comic bookish? So glad we have Snowpiercer this month which oddly I hadn’t seen yet!

      • I am not the biggest Star Wars fan either. I do like the original trilogy quite a lot, but I think they are a bit overrated by many people. On the other hand I love the new Star Wars films, both Force Awakens and The Last Jedi so because of that I’m very excited about this last one in the Skywalker saga. 😀 Did you watch the last two ? I’m guessing you are gonna watch this one eventually ?
I’m also very glad Snowpiercer was picked, I was very intrigued by it when I first saw it 5 years ago and I wanted for a long time to rewatch it so I’m excited to watch it for a 2nd time and see how I feel about it now. 🙂

      • No I really have no interest at all in Star Wars, it’s like Avengers or something to me… I really only liked Empire strikes back and Return of the Jedi.
I’m v. excited about Snowpiercer, too, as for some reason I have not seen it yet so this givesme the push to finally make it my first choice for one night!

      • Have you seen Parasite, his latest film ? It’s really great, I think it’s likely it will be nominated for Best Picture!

      • I have to say I read two reviews of it and I did not understand what it was supposed to be about… I must admit I’m not a big fan of (East) Asian films since I don’t know the languages and can’t interpret the tonality or facial expressions of the actors very well so I always find them to be a frustratingly incomplete experience personally :-(.

      • Better to not read too much about it, your experience will be better if you go in blind. I’m not a big fan of Asian films either, (not knowing the language does take a bit away from the experience in any foreign language movie) they tend to have a lot of annoying whining, but there are exceptions and Parasite is one of them. 🙂

      • Comic book movies are the biggest thing now and it’s not for nothing, there are many great ones in different genres in the last 15 years imo, some of them even excelent I would say. And Star Wars movies are more fantasy films than sci fi.

      • I like the Batman series; it’s quite dark and has a great look. Superhero movies don’t appeal to me at all; likewise western and most gangster films – it’s more guys shooting things than anything. I am quite amazed at how long this trend is lasting and how dominant it appears to be at cinemas. I think the audience for a lot of other stories incl. myself now largely gets their stories from streaming/TV.

      • I see, so which are the genres that appeal to you the most ? I like most genres, some more than others ofc, but I’m curious to see as many stuff as possible. My least favourites must be musicals and westerns, but in the last years I’ve seen some movies in these genres that I loved as well, like La La Land, Singin’ in the Rain (recently), Django Unchained. In the end it depends on how interesting the story is and how well made the movie is overall for me, no matter the genre I guess.
And I think the dominance of the comic book movies is just starting, in 2021 MCU will have 4 movies coming out for the first time and all of them quite different from each other so they’re getting more diverse too.

      • I’d say I probably like thrillers, coming-of-age and noir best (more the femme/homme fatal(e) ones than the gangster ones since I like the seduction theme). I also often like political dramas/thrillers and legal ones (I think that’s probably mainly an American genre. Comedy, like scifi, I like a lot when it’s great but in both cases it’s difficult to find ones you really enjoy, there are unfortunetely a lot of bad ones – but great to find those jewels in both cases! Easier with scifi since usually there will be a lot of buzz about good ones whereas comedy depends a lot on personal taste and cultural background.

      • I agree especially about comedies. I enjoy them when they are good, but there are many bad ones and I think the problem with comedy movies is that they very rarely have a very compelling story and that’s why very few of them are among my all time favourites, I’ll probably have only one in my top 50.

  13. As we all know, WordPress is not exactly user-friendly, but within these limits I am thinking of giving the site an overhaul – does anyone have any suggestions? People have commented previously that the menu on the left is not that easy to use. Currently you need to click on the category that you want and then a type of contents page opens up so you can find articles you want to. I do try to cross reference everything, but I do realise that it is not perfect. Any suggestions would be warmly welcomed.
