    • It was huge here in germany – I think it was the no. 1 fiction bestseller for 2 years. Re-watching the film made me enjoy it much more as I had re-read it just before seeing it at the cinema so then you’d make the inevitable comparisons.

      • I like both… the book was actually somewhat of a surprise in that many popular German novels of the last 30-40 years or so are just not v imaginative in their writing style so Suskind was a welcome relief from that.

      • That’s true: France has no real “hit” in literature anymore and the books that sell well are non-fiction, essays or superficial “good stories” books for mothers. More hilarious, a youtuber named Léna Situations got the BIGGEST book sell in years for a 90 pages book (with very big prints) with “advices” in fashion and “feeling good”. The very serious culture world in France and mostly Paris was puzzled and had no clue in how to explain this “success” for a book that’s mostly not gonna be read by the girls who bought it!

PS: thought you’d like to know, just caught my bf listening to Maruv :p

      • Good on your bf!
And LOL on the Infleuncer’s “book” – probably most of the people who bought it had never bought one before. I remember when I was in undergrad in Texas and took an English lit class, the prof asked “What’s the last book you read and what’s the last one you really liked?” and about 1/4 of the people in the class said sth. like “When I was in High School I had to read Lord of the flies and it was OK I guess.” One shudders to think what the answer would be today: “Book? You mean like Instagram stories?”
