  1. Notorious, Gaslight, Stromboli, Autumn Sonata (for which I forgot to vote), Spellbound.

Never been a fan of Casablanca, which wasn’t directed in anyway interesting for its time (compare it to films by Welles, Mankiewicz, Wilder or Wyler).

    • It’s got some great dialogue though, don’t you think? And a wonderful cast – imagine how it would have turned out with the originally planned leads, Ann Sheridan and Ronald Reagan.

    • I respectfully disagree…Casablanca is one of the most perfect films of all time in my opinion. Very carefully crafted and tells a very complex story about accountability during a time of global crisis. And the vichy bottle at the end is a brilliant touch! 😀 It may not have any flashy directorial tricks, but is that a bad thing? It is a bit regrettable that cinemas show it every year on Valentine’s Day, which reduces the film to its romance narrative when it’s so much more… I could go on…but I won’t! 🙂

  2. Difficult choice; one of my favorite and one of the all-time great actresses – a legend who is not known as a glamour queen. I picked Casablance, Spellbound (for some reason Notorious never captivated me that much – maybe because there seem to be a lot of similarities with one of my all-time favorite films, Gilda?), Orient Express and two some will probably see as hokey, the charming Bells of St. Mary’s and The Inn of the 6th Happiness, one of the few great adventure films with a female lead. Some great films missing from the list like The visit and TV’s A woman called Golda.

  3. I have some catching up to do! I have seen at least seven of these, but really liked them all. I have The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, but not seen it yet. My two favourites, by far, are Murder on the Orient Express and the criminally underrated Under Capricorn. Gaslight, Casablanca and Notorious made up the rest of my five.

      • I think similar to our discussion re Farhadi and Todos los saben this is a case of the director being a fish out of water. Might have worked quite well with Sirk as director, Lana Turner and, much as I love Joseph Cotten, a male lead who’s a little more rugged.

      • Ha! I think I might have been the other one! Partly because I haven’t seen most of the other films, and also, as far as I remember it was alright. She was probably one of the best things in it…Since then I watched Cactus Flower, which is a good fun sex comedy, but otherwise I’m really behind on my watching of Ingrid Bergman films…

      • There’s no such thing as too many Ingrid Bergman films – she really is one of the few actresses who managed to be down-to-Earth as well as glamourous. Julia Roberts Is a bit like that; they glammed her up in quite a few movies but she always seemed real, too.

      • That is one of the great things about these polls, they are good reminders of actors/actresses who do not get mentioned much nowadays. Doing this poll reminded me that I need to read her biography which I have had for ages!

      • I am glad I am not alone in my appreciation of Under Capricorn. I think I had seen so many bad reviews that I was expecting it to be a chore to watch like Jamaica Inn, but I really did like it. And the cast is great 🙂
